My favorite Photos of 2015

Another year is nearly past and besides a Camera upgrade to the 5DsR it also brought some new photos to my portfolio. And I was able to release two new post processing tutorials.

Unlike last year I didn’t travel so far. I stayed in Europe for my photography trips and visited southern France and Portugal. While France was quite challenging in terms of photography because of the weather conditions – clear skies, a lot of haze – Portugal was a blast. October brought some very changing weather to Sintra and the Algarve and between numerous showers of rain I was able to catch some fantastic lighting conditions.

All in all I took around 4000 photos from which I was able to process somewhere between 30 and 40. A lot less than I had hoped for but time as usual is the limiting factor when you do photography in your freetime besides a regular day job.

While this year was kind of a dry season in terms of photography for me, next year will bring a drastic change. If all goes as planned I’ll be posting photos from quite a few different countries in the second half of 2016. So stay tuned.

Till then here’s my top 10 from this year in chronological order.

Winters Tale

We didn’t see much snow this year but back in february I was lucky when I visited the Rhön. Sunrise didn’t deliver but around noon the clouds broke a bit and I was able to capture this dreamy photo.

Avignon

Avignon was the first stop during my trip through southern France and it also presented the perfect opportunity to try out my 5DsR. I got it just one day prior to leaving and I didn’t have much time to test it. I was quite releaved when I checked the photos to see that the combo with the Tamron 24-70mm lense as well as the Canon 16-35mm lense delivered the detail I had hoped for.

Infinity Fields

For a long time I had wanted to visit the endless Lavender fields of the Provence. This Summer I finally went there for one week. The scent of lavender in the air is always present when you drive or walk through those fields near Valensole. A fantastic place.

Verdon Moon

The first real long time exposure challenge for my 5DsR: photographing under a full moon in the Canyon du Verdon an hour before sunrise. The best time to be there is in the morning. You’ll encounter nearly no other people.

En Vau

No dramatic light in this photo but still a favorite of mine. I have this hanging as an 48” print in my office and it kind of brings me back to those beautiful days I spent in Cassis east of Marseille when I look at it. The Calanques are a real gem of nature on the crowded Cote d’Azure coast.

Adraga Sunset

What a great start this was for my Portugal trip. The second evening I went to Praia da Adraga, one of my favorite beaches in the world, and was greeted by this spectacular light show.

Praia da Ursa

For many years I had wanted to visit this beach. Back in 2011, when I last visited Sintra, I wasn’t able to photograph it because of tides and weather so I had to wait four years to get a second chance. The sunset wasn’t the show I had hoped for but the golden hour provided beautiful sidelight.

Cabo Raso

After some rain showers the sun finally started to break through the clouds for sunrise, which created this nice hazy light at Cabo Raso near Cascais.

Alfanzina Storm

After Sintra the Algarve was the second location I visited in Portugal this year. I did some google maps scouting prior to booking the house in Benagil, so I had locations as you see in this photo in walking distance.

Marinha Dawn

This was the most elusive photo to take this year. The first evening on the Algarve I scouted this location and I knew I had to photograph it in best light during sunrise. I then needed four attempts to get the light I wanted. Twice I got drenched as a storm moved in. The third time I got decent light but no more. The fourth attempt brought the best sunrise I have ever photographed.

Finally I want to wish you a good start into 2016 and a happy and successful year.
